What Pediatricians Check for During Routine Visits
posted: Jun. 05, 2025.
As parents, we often schedule routine pediatric checkups because we know we’re “supposed to.” But have you ever wondered what pediatricians are really looking for during these visits? At Children’s Health & Wellness, with locations in Tampa and Riverview, FL, we see every well-child visit as a powerful opportunity to support your child’s growth—physically, emotionally, and developmentally.
Physical Growth & Vital Signs
One of the first things your pediatrician will check is your child’s growth. That includes measuring height, weight, and head circumference (for infants and toddlers) to make sure they’re developing at a healthy pace. These numbers are compared to national growth charts so your provider can monitor trends over time. We’ll also check vital signs like heart rate, blood pressure, and temperature to ensure everything is within a healthy range.
Developmental Milestones
Whether your child is taking their first steps or starting middle school, we assess age-appropriate developmental milestones at every visit. This includes how they move, speak, interact, and problem-solve. Catching any developmental delays early allows us to offer support or referrals when needed—because early intervention can make all the difference.
Hearing, Vision & Screenings
As children grow, their sensory health becomes just as important as their physical health. Your pediatrician will perform routine vision and hearing checks, as well as screenings for anemia, lead exposure, and other conditions based on your child’s age and medical history.
Immunizations & Preventive Care
Routine visits are also when your child receives recommended vaccinations. These protect against serious illnesses and help maintain community-wide health. Your pediatrician will also talk through topics like nutrition, sleep, behavior, school readiness, and mental health, offering tailored guidance to support your child’s well-being.
Building a Trusted Relationship
At Children’s Health & Wellness, we believe routine visits are about more than just checklists. They’re a chance to build a trusting relationship with your child’s care team, ask questions, and feel empowered as a parent. We’re here to guide you through every stage—from newborn snuggles to teenage transitions.
